It is here that inland Australia, as far and beyond as Wentworth in NSW, was opened up to farming by William Randels’ paddle steamer. Australia’s first car was built by the Shearer Company and the town grew as a major shipping port en route to Port Adelaide.

Within minutes you can be studying river history at the Mannum Dock Museum or lazily enjoying a long lunch at the old Mannum Hotel that was underwater right up to the second floor during the 1956 flood.
